MEMORIAL FUND CREATED TO HONOR HENRY CONAWAY

A memorial fund with the Tyler ISD Foundation has been created to honor Henry Conaway, a 1940 graduate and athlete of Tyler High School.  The fund will help support the boys’ golf teams at Robert E. Lee High School and John Tyler High School.  

Conaway, an avid golfer died last week, at age 86.   He shot 9 “hole in ones” and scored his age many times. 

“This past June, Henry was a volunteer for our Gil Hitt Memorial Golf Tournament which supports the Tyler ISD Foundation”, said Larry Goddard, Executive Director.  “We were proud that Henry was a volunteer for Tyler ISD more than 68 years since his graduation.  He loved Tyler schools and our athletic programs.  This memorial fund is a fitting tribute to honor his life.”

           Mr. Conaway passed away on August 14, 2008 after a brief illness.

            He was born near Lindale on January 13, 1922 to the late Lee and Pearl Conaway. He was a Flight Officer in the Air Transport Command, serving his country in North Africa in World War II. After leaving the service, he was a salesman for a local car dealership before owning his own used car dealership.

           He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Franciel Conaway; a son, Dr. Hank Conaway and wife Karen; a daughter, Shane and husband Dr. Chris Freeman; grandchildren, Greg and Collin Conaway of Denver, Colorado, Adam Conaway of Austin, Anne Conaway of Denver, Nathan Voight of Tyler, Veronica and husband Jon Hocker of Tyler; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Conaway of Denver; and close friend of the family, Amber Stegall.
