TISD Student Competes in Rotax Grand National Competition
Moore MST Magnet School’s Miguel Renteria, a sixth grader, qualified and competed in the 2008 Rotax Grand National Competition as part of the USA International Raceway Association. The Rotax Grand Nationals is the largest international performance karting competition series in the world. The event represented the culmination of a national championship series held in 34 different states and regions all during the year. This is the second year for Miguel to qualify for the Rotax Grand National Competition.
Miguel finished in his class at 22nd place. He has been racing for six years and started when he was 4 years old. Miguel drives for Miguel Racing Team which is sponsored by Easy Roofing of Tyler, Texas owned by his father Rodrigo Lopez.
Each driver who qualified and competed earned their stripes by competing in regional Max Rotax Series in their home states and towns. Their expertise placed them at the front of the pack and across the finish line first more times than anyone else.
The goal for each individual competitor who belonged to the six classes racing in the Rotax Grand Nationals was to earn the national title and to be named to the Americas Team sponsored by Mazda to compete in the world championships which this year will be held in southern Italy in November.
The karts used in this competition have the ability to reach speeds of 60-75 mph. Miguel had a great day of racing in spite of less than perfect conditions.
