868 CAMP RANGER


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED

  2. Ability to assign work, instruct workers, inspect work and write reports

  3. Good communication skills and deal with others professionally

  4. Demonstrates aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities and be cognizant of good workmanship

  5. Three (3) years successful experience in camping and/or wildlife conservation or forestry

  6. Working knowledge of at least three(3) of the following: carpentry, mechanics, electricity, plumbing, telecommunication, HVAC, landscaping, sewage treatment, or welding

  7. First Aid, Aquatic Safety, CPR knowledge and current Food Service and Hazardous Materials Safety certification

  8. Thorough understanding of Texas Youth Camp Safety Act and County Health Code

  9. Ability to represent camp to the general public

  10. Plan projects, order materials, and evaluate progress

  11. Must be a self-starter, motivated, and willing to work for the welfare of children with the help of children

  12. Demonstrate civic mindedness and willingness to participate in local community organizations

  13. Be resourceful, creative, and demonstrate flexibility to respond rapidly to crisis or opportunity

  14. Background in agriculture, forestry and wildlife management or related sciences

  15. Must be willing to locate in provided housing on campus. 

  16. Must be willing to be on call around the clock. 

  17. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays and agree to one week per year of professional growth training.

JOB GOALS:

  1. To provide all students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, pleasant and smoothly functioning.

  2. Provide leadership in maintaining the camp/school/farm property, buildings and equipment in a condition of safety, neatness, and aesthetic attractiveness, taking measures to minimize impact of the ever increasing number of visitors so that each student may be provided with an outdoor environment which is both visually pleasing and safe.

  3. Successful protection and management of forest soil, water and wildlife/domestic animals/agriculture resources on property.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: : Noncontractual (At-will); Manual/Trades Paygrade: 6; Estimated 226 days; 8 hours daily. Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. 

Inspects school/campus/farm on a regular basis.  Reinspects to verify that previous deficiencies have been corrected

2. 

Maintains inventory of equipment by building/program, and consistent inventory supplies for school/campus/farm

3. 

Schedule, organize and supervise volunteers

4. 

Assigns tasks to volunteers, participates in those tasks and inspects completion of work

5. 

Instructs subordinates/volunteers in the safe and effective use of camp equipment

6. 

Serves as emergency substitute for other adults who are in charge of children

7. 

Serves as natural history interpreter for groups visiting the property

8. 

Instructs Boy Scouts on successful completion of service and conservation projects

9. 

Provide on the job training as required for new employees charge of children

10     

Operate all equipment in a safe manner

11.      

Check all systems (oil, water, fluids, etc.) regularly of equipment being operated

12 .    

Be observant of surroundings at all times when operating equipment

13.     

Be able to identify malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action

14.     

Participates in mowing grounds

15.     

Schedules supervises and assists in planting, cultivating, pruning and sowing of various trees, shrubs and seeds

16.     

Clean school/camp ground of trash and rubbish

17.     

Determine need for use of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides and administers or arranges for administration of same

18.     

Implements watering schedules, sets up and operates irrigation system in summer and responsible for winter storage of equipment

19.     

Observes all health hazards and warnings

20.     

Confers with Principal and other parties in making plans for maintenance of their campus/school/farm

21.     

Keep workshop stocked with supplies and appropriate spare parts

22.     

Keep a neat workshop with sharp, clean tools in good working order stored in an organized fashion

23.     

Keep a file of routine maintenance tasks, including task, including task description, tools required, frequency and completion dates

24.     

Keep records of non-routine maintenance tasks including cost estimates, schedule for completion and true costs

25.     

Maintain a file on Service Requests sent to Tyler ISD maintenance department

26.     

Routinely inspect the following and see to necessary maintenance: Bradford Lodge/Richardson Library, Woldert Cabin, Lindsey, Caldwell, Donaldson, Dudley, Clearing House, Sledge, Harvey and Genecov cabins, Blacksmith Shop, Tool Shed, Logging Shed, Copher Shed, Down Under, Warehouse, Kiwanis TeePee, Rockhouse and Ocean Bath Houses, Wash Stand, Homestead Area, Waterfrond (including 3 piers, lifejacket building, pole shed and 30 boats with storage racks), Amphitheater, sewer system, seven miles of trail, six bridges, three miles of dirt road, trucks, tractors, trailers, lawn mowers, chair saws, pump, and generators

Maintenance on building includes, screens, windows, latches, light bulbs, HVAC filters, plumbing, electrical, floors, woodwork, roofs, paint, and all furniture and fixtures, fire extinguisher and smoke alarms

28.     

In all maintenance procedures minimize cost and uphold a policy of preventative maintenance

29.     

Be constantly on the alert for unsafe conditions and highest priority to correction

30.     

Keep dirt roads smooth and well drained

31.     

Keep trails free of erosion.  Remove dead tree limbs from overhead as well as other hazards, Keep "second growth" vegetation removed

32.     

Change oil, filters, tune-up, grease, adjust, etc. all mechanical equipment on schedule.  Keep current safety inspection sticker on campus motor vehicles

33.     

Winterize all exterior plumbing and machinery whenever freezing conditions are predicted

34.     

Follows the daily work schedule carefully and keeps busy

35.     

Performs other tasks as assigned by the Camp Directory

36.     

Help with skilled trades when needed

37.     

Move furniture, etc., when needed

38.     

Assist in any emergency repair or clean up

39.     

Know how many and when campus visitors are arriving and departing.  Know who is in charge

40.     

Inspect buildings and areas to be used by campers with youth group leaders.  Discuss safety, use and clean up procedures.  Review campers'' planned program of activities and alert leaders of potential safety concerns.

41.     

Monitor traffic and motor vehicle speed of campers

42.     

Notify youth group leaders of emergency phone calls and weather alerts

43.     

During tornado warnings escort all campers to designated shelter areas.  In case of fire, dial 911 and gather all campers to appropriate area

44.     

Inspect all buildings and areas used by campers at the end of their stay with youth group leader.  Be sure that everything is back in place, clean and ready for use by teachers on Monday.  Check lights and thermostats

45.     

Instruct groups on service projects and issue necessary tools and materials required

46.     

At the beginning of each weekly program (usually Sunday), inspect camp with youth group leader.  Take physical inventory of camp equipment, furniture  and fixtures.  Read electric meters and main water meter, note physical conditions and cleanliness of buildings, discuss current camp/program changes.  Review emergency procedures

47.     

Through the week, make periodic inspections of kitchen and bathrooms to insure that health standards are being maintained

48.     

Report any violations of Texas Youth Camp Safety Act to youth group leader and Camp Director.  Bring to an immediate halt any activities that are clearly unsafe and jeopardize the well being of a child

49.     

At end of weekly program (usually Saturday), inspect camp with youth group leader from that program.  Take physical inventory to match that taken at the beginning of week.  Read meters.  Report deficiencies to youth group leader and reinspect after deficiencies have been corrected

50.     

Create written report addressing meter readings and damages

51.     

Visit with leaders and promote a feeling of good will toward the camp

52.     

Treat garbage dumpster with odor controlling enzymes weekly throughout summer

53.     

Confer and coordinate with any local, state and national agencies and organizations concerning projects

54.     

Control populations of feral animals

55.     

Maintain master forestry Plan

56.     

Become familiar with the diversity of flora and fauna on the property

57.     

Maintain feeding stations, brush piles, nest boxes and forage plantings to attract wildlife where they may be observed by children

58.     

Keep the mile and a half of waterfront free of flotsam

59.     

Maintain educational displays of wildlife and outdoor manners

60.     

Contact proper authorities to handle trespassers and hunters

61.     

As much as is practical control poison ivy and fire ants

62.     

Remove any dead trees and/or animals within 100 feet of any building

63.     

Remove windfalls from roadways and trails

64.     

Serve as a camp representative working in cooperation with the District Environmental Safety Supervisor

65.     

Maintain an updated copy of the Tyler ISD "Hazard Communication Manual" and keep it in designated location

66.     

Insure labeling of all required containers

67.     

Obtain/maintain the MSDSs

68.     

Train/retrain all camp staff as required

69.     

Update and add to the list of hazardous chemicals if any new or different chemicals are used

70.     

Obtain and use appropriate protective clothing and equipment

71.     

Become familiar with blueprints and contractors

Assist with receiving materials

Inspect contracted work

Help with construction

EQUIPMENT USED:

Ability to efficiently operate a front end loader, bull dozer, fork lift, backhoe, box blade, and tractor with mower, post hole digger or plow.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental demands: Reading ; ability to perform basic arithmetic; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress.  Read operating instructions, blueprints and technical literature

Physical Demand/Environmental Factors:  Must possess good physical dexterity and have the ability to lift 50 pounds of weight, walk five miles and work in outdoor extremes of heat, cold and humidity.
