IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is designed for students in grades 6-10 who have been identified as gifted and talented or who meet entrance criteria and are highly motivated to do in-depth studies in eight subject areas. The curriculum is driven by five areas of interaction that are integrated into class work which is presented with an international focus. The areas of interaction are Community Service, Health and Social Education, the Environment, Approaches to Learning and Homo Faber (Man the Maker).

Cross curricular studies include for example: an eighth grade unit that begins in Language A (English) with the literary analysis of Cry the Beloved Country. In science African biomes and environmental issues become the focus of instruction. International civil rights movements are compared to similar struggles in American history and African artwork is explored in visual arts class. For community service, students organize a book sale that benefits library programs in southern Africa.

A unique feature of the IBMYP curriculum is the required Language B (a second language). Three languages are offered at James S. Hogg including Spanish, French and German. In eighth grade students take these classes and others for high school credit.
