EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
SAFE & DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS |
Tyler Independent School District is committed to the safety of our students, volunteers and staff. We are taking a two-pronged approach in
order to fulfill our commitment. Safe & Drug-Free Schools For years, Tyler ISD has had a strong alliance with Safe and Drug
Free schools. This is evidenced by the application for and procuring of the federal Title IV Safe and Drug Free Grant a number of years ago. This grant is still ongoing.
The monies from this grant enable the district to help fund programs connected with Safe and Drug Free Schools, training and salary.
Another evidence of the district’s commitment is the formation of the
federally mandated School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). This committee is made up of community members, high
school students and school personnel. The areas of concern for this committee include Health, Physical Education and Safe and Drug Free. The committee brings their
recommendations before the School Board who, in turn, either accept or reject the recommendations for use in the district. Emergency Management
The other major part of keeping students, volunteers and staff safe is under the umbrella of emergency management. Tyler ISD is in compliance with the mandates given by
the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). We have an Emergency Operations Plan in which administrators,
counselors, faculty and staff have been trained. Each campus has a Trauma Response Team that is trained bi-annually to enable the readiness for any emergency situation
with which the campus may be faced. These teams are also presented with and participate in emergency exercises from time to time so that they may address issues that are
unique to their campus. Also, each staff member in the district has a copy and knowledge of a quick reference guide to numerous emergencies that could happen on a
campus. |
