Parent Resource Center

(Parents Assisting with the Learning of Students)

The parent resource center located in the Title I Parenting Center is stocked with educational materials and family board games for grades K-12. Parents may check out materials for two weeks. Many of the materials are available in English and Spanish. Videos, tapes and electronic games are also available.

RULES

  • Your child must attend a TISD Title I school.

  • Materials can only be checked out by parent(s) or legal guardian(s).

  • Parents must have verification of residence. (utility bill, driver's license, I.D. card)

  • Materials may be kept for 2 weeks only.

  • Materials lost or damaged may result in a replacement fee.

  • If you withdraw from your school, materials must be returned to the campus office.

  • You may check out a maximum of 2 items for each child during each visit.


 

H.E.L.P.

(Home Education Liaison Person)

HELP is a tutorial program providing one-on-one instruction in the home for approximately one hour for students in grades 4 to 12. Instruction is provided to assist students in preparing for the TAKS assessment. Instruction is provided by retired teachers. Parents must be present to participate in the teaching sessions.


 

Parent Workshops

The workshops are designed to assist parents with strategies to positively impact individual student learning such as, homework, discipline TAAS and many others. All workshops are in English and Spanish. These workshops are presented on the Title I campuses when requested during the day or evenings.
Title I provides a bus for transportation of parents to the workshop. The topics are based on the interest of the parents. The Smith County Health Clinic directs some of the sessions.

Workshops are provided for Spanish speaking parents at the Title I Parenting Center. workshops are presented weekly during the school day with transportation and baby sitting provided. Over forty topics based on interest and need will be presented. This year, one session per month is being presented for men The Lake Country Health Clinic and the Tyler Police Department present some of the sessions.

The workshops are designed to assist parents with strategies to positively impact individual student learning on such topics as homwork, discipline, TAKS and many others.

These workshops may also be presented on the Title I campuses during the day or evenings upon request from the individual Title I campuses. Transportation for parents to the workshop may be provided.


 

Summer Sensations

Summer Sensation packets contain a calendar, summer learning activities that will take about 45 minutes per day in either reading or math, family activities that are free on Friday appropriate to the grade level, answer sheets for the parents and a library book. This assures each child 1st grade and above will have a book of his or her very own. The activities at each grade level include some math and reading activities related to the book. This material is provided in both English (K-8) and Spanish (K-4).


 

Computer Program

Parents attend workshops to receive instruction on the use of the computer. Keyboarding, computer basics and the internet are some of the topics being presented. Each participant is asked to attend four consecutive sessions. Instruction is presented in English and Spanish. The computer classes are being presented at the computer lab located on the Gary campus.

Parenting Center

The Parenting Center is located at 621 South Gaston, adjacent to the Head Start building. the center is utilized for meetings and workshops. Materials for both, parents, and students, as well as, computers for parents use are housed in this facility. A congenial staff, speaking English and Spanish, is available each day.

TAKS Packets

The Title I Parenting Center provides packets to assist students and parents in preparation for the TAKS test. The materials in the packets assure students and parents have an opportunity to develop an understanding of the skills tested and the format in which they will be tested. A suggested calendar, test-taking strategies and answer key bare included. The TAKS packets are available for grades 3 to Exit Level. TAKS packets are available in Spanish for grades 3 to 6 and English for grades 3 to Exit. Parents are notified when the packets are available for students at identified Title I schools. They may be obtained by calling the Title I Parenting Office and requesting a packet.
