6th grade Advanced Math

Sixth grade advanced math is a challenging, fast-paced course which offers students an opportunity to learn both 6th and 7th grade math in one year.  When students have successfully completed sixth grade advanced math, they are placed either into Algebra I or Pre-Algebra as seventh graders.

Moore MST Magnet School is the only school in East Texas, public or private, which offers a 7th grade algebra class for high school credit.  In 2001-2002, about students are enrolled in 7th grade algebra; these students are scoring higher as a group than the 8th  grade and 9th grade algebra students in TISD.  In addition, about 25 students who took algebra as 7th graders are enrolled in high school geometry as 8th graders.  They are also doing well; all advanced math offerings are taught on the Moore campus so that students may be with their peers.   These students are two years ahead in math, which will allow them to take more difficulty college-preparatory math classes in high school.

Students who take pre-algebra as 7th graders will take high school algebra in 8th grade and will be one year ahead in math.  Sixth grade advanced math is a prerequisite for both 7th grade pre-algebra and 7th grade algebra.  Placement into either pre-algebra or algebra is based on grades, work habits, and two screening exams which are given in the spring of the sixth grade year.

Students qualify for sixth grade advanced math in one of two ways.  First, all students accepted into the magnet program at Moore as sixth graders are expected to take sixth grade advanced math.  Applications for the Magnet program may be picked up at Moore or any of the elementary campuses in TISD.  Acceptance into the program is determined by a student's past academic performance and by his or her conduct grades.  Students must also be able to articulate good reasons for wanting to be in the program, and parents must be willing to support the students in what promises to be a rigorous, challenging curriculum which requires lots of work at home.

Second, students from Moore feeder campuses-Bonner, Bell and Clarkston who have academic records equal to that of magnet students, will automatically be scheduled into sixth grade advanced math.

Sixth grade advanced math is appropriate for bright, serious students who want to work hard and learn at a faster pace than would be offered in an on-level class.  It offers a tremendous advantage for students who plan to attend college in the future and who want to begin preparing early.
