Career ConnectionsCareer Connections is a one semester course for eighth graders. High school credit is received for successfully completing the course. Volunteers from various career fields routinely are guest speakers in the class. A Jr. Achievement volunteer presents a program on economics and personal budgeting for the class each semester. A state agency, SOICC, (Texas State Occupational Coordinating Committee) provides computer software and information on careers for the course. Additional up to date information is also provided by Tech Prep, a local agency. This course involves students studying thousands of career possibilities and how to go about choosing the right career for the individual based on knowing themselves better. Knowing the many skills common to a variety of careers and the process used to locate and secure employment is another part of the course.
