We engage in a daily adventure as we consider how history affects us all.
US History Major Eras

European Explorers and their relationship with the natives.
Colonialism and the 13 colonies. The development of New England, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies are explored through their commonalities and differences. Understanding the economic, religious, and cultural development of the colonies is critical to understanding US History. This period also covers the French and Indian War, the Declaration of 1763, the Boston Massacre, and the First Continental Congress.
The Revolution. The major events (battles of the war and the Second Continental Congress), people (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and others), and documents (Declaration of Independence, plays of Otis Warren, Common Sense, and The Crisis), of the revolutionary era highlight this time of study.
Growth of the Nation. The Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, Federalism, the "Constitutional Presidents" (Washington-Monroe) and Westward expansion (Erie Canal, Louisiana Purchase, Missouri Compromise) are the major themes of this era. The "Growth Presidents" (JQ Adams-Polk) are also studied.
The Conflict Grows. From the Missouri Compromise in 1820 through the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, we explore the growing disagreement over slavery and the growth of sectionalism. The Mexican War, acquisition of Texas, California, Oregon, and the southwest all lead to conflict over the spread of slavery. The founding of the Republican Party, the elections of 1856 and 1860, and the Dred Scott Case are key. The "Conflict Presidents" (Taylor-Buchanan) struggle to keep the country together.
Civil War and Reconstruction. The nation goes to war over the election of Lincoln and the spread of slavery. The major battles of the war, strategy of the north and south, and major figures (Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant) are also studied. The wars end and Lincoln's assasination in April of 1865 brings our last era.
Reconstruction. As the war draws to a close, Lincoln plans the reconstruction of the physical south, but his assassination, the myth of the "Redemption Democrats", and the fight over Amendments 13, 14, and 15 between President Johnson and the Radical Republicans in congress leads to Johnson's impeachment and the cultural reconstruction of the south.
We also do several major projects during the year. Our projects include Colonialism, the Bill of Rights, 18th and 19th Century Timeline, and the Civil War. You can link from my home page to these projects as the year progresses. My Texas History Projects are also there.
In the spring, we play the CIVIL WAR GAME! You will have an opportunity to lead troops into battle and help your army as they seek victory on the field.
