Objective:  TLW identify and sketch reflectional, translational, and rotational symmetry.

Transformation Study Guide

Background

Symmetry can be found in nature, art, architecture, etc.  M. C. Escher is the foremost artist in the use of symmetry and transformations.  Some examples of symmetry are:  the petals of a flower, the design on a tiled floor, and the appearance of the human body.

Vocabulary

  1. Transformation:  A transformation occurs when a figure is altered from its original position or size.

  2. Reflection:  (Flip) A reflection is a mirror image of an object.

  3. Translation:  (Slide) A translation occurs when a figure is moved up, down, right, left, or a combination of these directions.

  4. Rotation:  (Turn) A rotation occurs when a figure is turned in a circular motion.
